emerson on the self-reliance of human beings

There is a time in every man’s education when he ar-

rives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imi-

tation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for

worse as his portion; that though the wide universe is

full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to

him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground

which is given to him to till.

-ralph waldo emerson

through a recommendation to read the writings of nfl/soldier pat tillman it was mentioned that he prized the self reliance essay by emerson. in this quote emerson emphasizes commitment, and seizing opportunity, it made me think of us as people and the way that things (material possessions) drive what we do instead of passion and our true personalities driving us to success. having little clutter agrees with the ability to create and seize opportunities because it promotes optimal focus.

Woah! No way! A blog post on Emerson! This can’t be real. All I hear and see of Emerson are complaints and tears. But this is good stuff. What you say about “true personalities” reflects what Emerson was going for, and shows that his vision of the human spirit LIVES into our time! That is amazing, at the least.
